 Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands. Roughly circular, it has an average diameter of just over 30 miles and rises to the 6,400-ft Pico de las Nieves at its centre. Gran Canaria has been billed as a ‘miniature continent’ because of the variety of climates and landscapes that it offers, from the big city bustle of the capital, Las Palmas, to the serenity of its lush woodlands. Gran Canaria lies around 120 miles off the west coast of Africa and offers all year sunshine – especially in the south of the Island. The north of the island is humid, boasting green valleys and volcanic craters, while the south is arid and desert-like with vast stretches of beach. Tourists generally favour the southern coastline, flocking to the well-known beaches of Playa del Inglés or Maspalomas, where the sea washes soft sands and empty dunes stretch for miles.

Things to see and do in Gran Canaria |
Aqualand: Situated in Maspalomas, Aquasur is a water-based theme park with something for all the family in its 130,000 square metres of space. The park is open all year and features various pools, slides and water attractions including Congo River, Surf Beach, Kamikaze, Winder, Rapids, Twister and the exotic mini-park - Polinesia. |

Ocean Park is the smallest of Gran Canaria’s water parks, but it still offers a good value for money. The park has 13 different slides, a selection of pools of which the wave pool is my favourite, plus the usual eateries. Bus services run from various parts of Gran Canaria to the Park at 20-minute intervals throughout the day. |

Sioux City was originally built as a film set at the start of the 1970's. Since the decline in the making of westerns visitors have been given the chance to take a step back to the days of the ‘Wild West’, when cowboys and Indians roamed the plains of America. Gunfights, saloon fights, western barbeques and other scenes are all faithfully represented at Sioux City and visitors of all ages will enjoy the performances. The park also features a zoo for young visitors. |
