The most north-easterly of the Canaries, Lanzarote is a dry and fairly flat island whose bizarre landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity – barren lava fields, craters and Fire Mountain itself (in the Timanfaya National Park) where heat still radiates from just beneath the surface. UNESCO declared the whole island a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, and visitors exploring the dozens of enchanting spots on the island will soon see why. Do visit the National Park as it’s the nearest thing on Earth to the moons barren surface. The main holiday resort is Puerto del Carmen and is for holidaymakers who like beaches, nightlife and bars in abundant supply and easily accessible. Popular with teenagers, though not a "lager lout" resort. A quieter neighbour is either Playa de los Pocillos or Matagorda which are more family friendly resorts yet still close enough for those who enjoy a livelier nightlife. The other main resorts on Lanzarote are Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca both better suited to holidaymaker looking for a nice beach holiday but without too much nightlife.
