Santorini is one of the most famous islands in the world. Located 100 kilometres north of Crete, the volcanic island of Santorini, officially known as Thira explodes into the Aegean Sea. A unique, crescent shaped, island formed by an ancient volcanic eruption said to have taken place in 1650BC and with the most breathtaking views in all the Greek islands. The inner edge of Santorini island plunges almost 900 feet into the sea and the outer coast has long black volcanic beaches. Fira, the capital, is perched above towering cliffs and is connected to the harbour below by a winding path of steps and a cable lift. Its whitewashed houses are constantly photographed and it also boasts many excellent restaurants, shops and bars.
