It is easy to wax lyrical about the island of Jamaica in the north of the Caribbean. The glorious glow of its sunsets, the unique and engaging ways of its people, the alluring white sandy beaches and lush green mountains, the sparkling waterfalls. All can inspire the poet in anyone. The beauty of this island paradise has drawn visitors for centuries: first it was the wealthy few who were privileged to enjoy the unspoilt tropical delights of Jamaica. Today the northern and western coastlines of the island bristle with tourist resorts and 'all-inclusive' hotels, and natural attractions have been commercialised to cope with the crowds and make the most out of the tourists.

Things to see and do in Jamaica |
Dunn's River Falls: Dunn's River Falls Park is the perfect environment for fun and relaxation for the entire family. There is a delightful new discovery around every corner. A stone's throw from Ocho Rios, one of Jamaica's fastest growing resort centres, Dunn's River Falls is unique. Described as a living and growing phenomenon, it continuously regenerates itself from deposits of travertine rock, the result of precipitation of calcium carbonate from the river, as it flows over the falls. Climb the falls in a human chain led by experienced Falls Guides. Pause at the 'massage parlour' and experience the soothing effects of the water as it cascades to the sea. For those that don't want to get wet they can view the activities of the more intrepid from the "safe" vantage point of the terrace or deck. And for those who enjoy mother nature's gifts, lose yourself in lush tropical foliage - ferns, bamboos, ginger lilies, crotons, orchids, a variety of palms and breadfruit trees. There are also gifts shops and cafes plus picnic areas. Tip! If you intend to climb the falls then wear suitable footwear. Trainers are idea as they can soon dry out. When I visited the falls there wasn't an age restriction but young children (under 8's) will find it difficult.

Black River Safari: If crocodiles are your thing, then take a trip up the Black River (the longest river on Jamaica) and you'll get right up close with them. Its name refers to the darkness of the river bed that has been lined with thick layers of decomposing vegetation. As you go down the river you will learn the history of Black River from your guide who will also tell you all about the wildlife and flora. The best way to find a trip to Black River is to check with you hotels reception where you'll find information available on all excursions. |

Jamaica offers a wide range of activities to suit most families including, Horse riding, Snorkelling, Scuba Diving, Deep Sea Fishing, Glass Bottom Boats Trips, Parasailing and a host of other things to do. Ask at your hotels reception for recommendations as they will know the best. |
