Santorini Holidays - Travel Guide

Typical black sand beach on SantoriniSantorini is one of the most famous islands in the world. Located 100 kilometres north of Crete, the volcanic island of Santorini, officially known as Thira explodes into the Aegean Sea. A unique, crescent shaped, island formed by an ancient volcanic eruption said to have taken place in 1650BC and with the most breathtaking views in all the Greek islands. The inner edge of Santorini island plunges almost 900 feet into the sea and the outer coast has long black volcanic beaches. Fira, the capital, is perched above towering cliffs and is connected to the harbour below by a winding path of steps and a cable lift. Its whitewashed houses are constantly photographed and it also boasts many excellent restaurants, shops and bars.

Important note! Although Santorini is a wonderful island it isn't really suited to family holidays. If however you still wish to see what's on offer then please use the search box below.

Things to do in Santorini

If you are looking for theme & water parks then Santorini isn't for you. There are however a few things to keep you occupied if you need a break from the pool or beach. The Mediterranean Dive Club celebrates its 10th birthday this year as a fully organized diving center and is one of the most up to date in the Cyclades islands. Located on Perissa beach, with the harbour and the dive sites just around the corner, they will be glad to take you out on a speed boat for either diving, snorkeling or taking a PADI course. Experienced staff and instructors promise a unique experience of the under water spectacular world of Santorini. Dive in the Mediterranean and experience the big blue sea, watching new interesting animals, plants, lava formed bottoms, caves, drop offs; all in the crystal clear waters surrounding Santorini and the Volcano Islands. The club offers a two-hour Discover Scuba Diving - daily at 10:00 and 14:00. There are several great walks around the island and the best place to see the sun set is at Ola. There are several different boats that offer various trips out of Santorini harbour. The boat trips include the Akrotiri ruins, the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, and the island of Thirassia. A novel way of experiencing the Santorini sunset is by embarking on a sunset cruise on board a traditional Santorini boat. Most of the harbours of the island run regular sunset cruises.
